  4. TSet is a Host 2.0/Tabby 2.0 NetMail utility designed to update the
  5. Config file to make sure that the next TabbyNet event takes place when it
  6. should. TSet reads a Tabby 2.0 text file called Next Event to get the time
  7. of the next network mail event. It then alters the Config file
  8. accordingly.
  9.  
  10. You should make TSet one of the last events in each time period you’ve
  11. defined as a Tabby NetMail Event.
  12.  
  13. To configure TSet, hold down the mouse button when you launch TSet and
  14. fill in the name of your Host program. As TSet is distributed, it’s set to
  15. launch Red Ryder Host -- if that is what you call Host you do not need to
  16. change anything.
  17.  
  18. Once you have configured TSet, insert TSet near the end of all Tabby
  19. NetMail events. Run Tabby Maint and use its “Events” menu to insert TSet
  20. as the last -- or almost last -- event in each TabbyNet chain. This
  21. enables TSet to update the Red Ryder Host Config file to correctly launch
  22. TabbyNet at its next scheduled time. A typical short TabbyNet event might
  23. look like this:

  29. You should enter TSet in *every* Tabby NetMail event you have scheduled.
  30. Do *not* enter TSet in other places such as Tabby Robot or TabbyNet
  31. resource STR s -- this may cause you to skip an event.

  33. Version History
  34.  
  35. Version 1.0 had a small bug -- it clipped one byte off of the end of the
  36. Config file, thereby making Host forget if the DTR option was set. Version
  37. 1.0.1 fixed this, supposedly, but behaved strangely if a Config file was
  38. one byte short as a result of previous accidents. Version 1.0.2 is smarter
  39. and more flexible. Version 1.3 is rewritten to make it smaller, faster and
  40. “BBS-aware” -- if you follow Michael Connick’s instructions and end your
  41. Events file with “BBS” and if TSet is the last event in the chain, TSet
  42. will translate BBS into whatever name you’ve configured Tabby to recognize
  43. as your BBS. Also, TSet 1.3 has a configuration dialog -- hold down the
  44. mouse button when you launch it to tell it the name of your BBS
  45. application. Version 1.6 is recompiled and re-version-numbered to match
  46. the other applications in this release.

  60.                  TImport, TExport and TSet: An Overview
  61.  
  62. Three utilities are required to link Host 2.0 and Tabby 2.0: my versions
  63. are called TImport, TExport and TSet. Without these utilities, or similar
  64. utilities written by Mike Lininger or authors to come, Host and Tabby
  65. cannot communicate with each other. Host has no built-in method for
  66. talking to Tabby, and Tabby has no built-in method for communicating with
  67. Host. Instead, Tabby author Michael Connick defined a text file format for
  68. “generic” messages which Tabby produces and reads.
  69.  
  70. There are three “flavors” of generic files: Generic Import, a text file
  71. created by TabbyNet containing the text of inbound messages; Generic
  72. Export, a text file created by a utility such as TExport containing the
  73. text of outbound messages; and Generic Echoes, a text file which TabbyNet
  74. uses to hold EchoMail pending its distribution to other nodes.
  75.  
  76. TImport reads the content of the Generic Import file and converts each
  77. text message into a valid Red Ryder Host message. It then marks the
  78. processed text messages for deletion. TImport should be run just after
  79. TabbyNet DeliverMail, the TabbyNet component which creates the Generic
  80. Import file, and it should be run whenever TabbyNet DeliverMail is run --
  81. whether in a NetMail Event or a CrashMail Event. TImport converts both
  82. Echoes and Private NetMail messages into proper Host messages. In order to
  83. do its job, TImport initially must be told which section to use for
  84. Private NetMail. You can configure TImport by running it while holding
  85. down the mouse button and entering the Private NetMail section number,
  86. along with the name of your Red Ryder Host application (mine’s called
  87. “Host”; everyone else’s is called “Red Ryder Host”). Read the
  88. documentation on TImport for additional information.

  90. TExport reads Red Ryder Host messages, looking for network items. To
  91. qualify for export, a message must be entered locally and must be in a
  92. Private NetMail or Public Echo section. TExport keeps track of the
  93. messages it processes: it sets a flag on processed messages so that they
  94. will never be processed again, and it keeps track of the highest message
  95. it’s looked at and starts each session with the next higher numbered
  96. active message. TExport creates a text file called Generic Export, which
  97. TabbyNet subsequently processes. TExport should be run just before the
  98. TabbyNet “Send” duo: TabbyNet SendMail and TabbyNet SendNews, and it
  99. should be run whenever they are run -- whether in a NetMail Event or a
  100. CrashMail Event. They will take the Generic Export contents and turn the
  101. text into outbound messages. TExport rarely has to deal with a high volume
  102. of messages unless you are lucky enough to have a very active base of
  103. message-posters. TExport does not touch Echo Mail which is being routed to
  104. other boards -- TabbyNet keeps pending mail in the Generic Echoes file.
  105. TExport needs to be configured when it is first run: hold down the mouse
  106. button while launching it and tell it the “highest message read” (enter
  107. the highest active message number on your board) and the name of your Red
  108. Ryder Host application, in addition to some options. Read the specific
  109. documentation on TExport for more information.

  111. TSet is a simple utility which reads a TabbyNet-produced text file called
  112. “Next Event”. This file contains the time of the next Tabby Event. TSet
  113. reads this text file and uses its information to alter the Host Config
  114. file so that Host launches TabbyNet when it should (this is critical if
  115. you’re running more than one mail event per day). Configure TSet by
  116. launching it while holding down the mouse button and telling it the name
  117. of your Host application -- that's its only option. TSet should be run as
  118. one of the last events in any NetMail Event. You should *not* include it
  119. in Tabby Robot or CrashMail strings -- doing so can cause Host to skip
  120. event schedules (this can happen if someone CrashMails you a few minutes
  121. before a scheduled event and stays on the board until after the Event was
  122. supposed to start: if you include TSet in this situation, it will tell
  123. Host to skip the event; if you don’t include TSet here, Host will launch
  124. TabbyNet properly). Read the specific documentation on TSet for more
  125. information.

  143. If TExport, TImport and TSet are examples of what I give away free,
  144. imagine how good my “send in $25” programs are! If you aren’t a registered
  145. user of Archie, you’re missing out on a slew of good utility programs,
  146. including mehitabel, QU, Tally and many other Host and Tabby enhancements
  147. I’ve written. Here’s a partial list of what registered Archie users

  151. more than 30 commands to the Host structure, including log backup, string

  155. locally *or* remotely.

  157. • mehitabel, a clever utility to automatically back up your message
  158. files, with selective deletes of old messages in whatever sections you
  159. choose. Version 2.0 runs up to 24 times faster than mehitabel 1.2 and
  160. offers many enhancements, including robust capability to recover damaged
  161. message sections, delete by age, archiving deleted messages to text
  162. files and more.

  164. • Tally, an automatic message reporter which shows message activity for
  165. the past 10 days, section by section.
  166.  
  167. • QU, an enhancment to the built-in Host 2.0 “Quote of the Day” function.

  170. Copy, Jump, Log-O-Matic, Splice, Timestamp, Timestart, Resize FSecs,
